The Greater Panama City Dog Fancier's Association welcomes you to our web site and we hope you enjoy our new look. A lot has gone into making this site a valuable resource for all dog enthusiasts everywhere. Please read on for a brief description of who we are and how we got started.
The Greater Panama City Dog Fanciers' Association, Inc. was chartered by the American Kennel Club and incorporated in the state of Florida in 1972. The founders and charter members included Mr. Gus Tingle, Mrs. Evelyn Tingle, Mrs. Barbara Bryan, Mrs. Betty Christian, Lt.Col. James Christian, Mr. Jim Vagenas and Mrs. Helen Shuh. The first president was Mr. Gus Tingle. Other past presidents include Lester Doty, Florence Doty, Mary Bratsen, Mary Ann Olson, James Christian, Biff Hunt, Polly Hunt, Judy Purvis, Kathi Edwards, Jim Vagenas, Jean Moseley, Richard Robbins and Margaret Adcock. The purpose of the club was and is to promote purebred dogs through proper care, training, knowledgeable breeding and to provide information and education for dog enthusiasts and the general public. To that end, the club sponsors two American Kennel Club licensed dog shows, and two American Kennel Club sanctioned dog matches each year. The first competitive match was held in 1973 for local and surrounding area dogs. The club was approved for regular point shows by the AKC after successfully completing 3 of these matches. The first AKC licensed regular point dog show was held in Panama City in 1975, with Lester Doty as the first Show Chairman. Dogs from 48 states and many foreign countries were entered to earn show points towards becoming an AKC champion of record. Since the club's inception, our activities have expanded to include puppy handling classes, educational programs at meetings, Pet Week poster contests through the Bay County schools, Halloween Dog-O-Ween costume contests, Oktoberfest Weiner Dog contests, Panama City Christmas Parade, St. Andres B ay Center's Spring Fling, the Scottish Festival, Junior Museum Pioneer Days and the Bay County Fair. The club also maintains a breeders index available at the number below. The club meetings are held the third Monday of each month (except May and December) at 7:30 PM (Central Time) at the clubhouse located at 4909 East 11th Street in Panama City, Florida. The general public is always welcome to attend these meetings.
